Chapter 20

They spent the following weeks blissfully working together. They made their way through the Death Kiss steps and seemed to be making progress on the cure. As the leaves yellowed in color and the days grew shorter, Orinda knew their time together would soon end. Every time she left the lab, she scanned for Asher in the shadows. However, each day that passed he didn’t appear, and she started to allow herself to dream. What if he really wasn’t coming back? What if she and Basil really discovered the cure together? What if she was able to take it? And be human. And be with Basil…

The hope alone made her feel alive.

They worked daily and often went to town together in the evenings. She even enjoyed the vaudeville shows as long as Basil was by her side.

She also visited her cave periodically to check on the leech, which always slithered somewhere just out of reach. As she and Basil grew more consumed with the cure, she worried less about the leech; it didn’t seem to be a threat at all.

As each day passed, her love for Basil deepened, along with her worry for him—especially when soldiers started arriving at the hospital with influenza.

She was needed more and more in the hospital, leaving Basil to tend to the sample on his own. Orinda was grateful that he was tucked away safely in the lab; hopefully, he wouldn’t catch the illness himself. It comforted her when the fort went into quarantine, but she still made him promise not to eat in the mess hall.

The first soldier that died from Spanish Influenza made her panic. She was with him until the end, holding his hand while he took his last breath. She couldn’t help but imagine she was holding Basil’s hand. Tears streamed down her cheeks while she considered a future without him.

Pearl had to pull her away from the soldier, and Orinda found herself hugging her roommate.

Pearl held her close and wordlessly rubbed her back, probably feeling the same fears.

Orinda stepped back and scrutinized her roommate’s face. Pearl was healthy and hadn’t gotten sick… yet. Orinda realized she shouldn’t let any nurses tend to the sick. She should take care of all the patients herself.

“Pearl, you need to be careful. Wear your mask at all times.”

Pearl gave her a sad smile. “Same with you.”

Orinda nodded and pulled her mask over her nose, even though it wasn’t necessary for a vampire.

She spent the rest of the day ushering the other nurses away, getting to the sickest patients first. They didn’t protest. Everyone understood Orinda had a special immunity, although no one dared ask why.

By the end of the day, Orinda looked forward to crawling into bed, but she pushed on. She needed to keep as many humans safe as possible. After dinner, the hospital quieted as the patients slept, and she decided to sneak away to check on Basil.

The crisp autumn evening chilled her while she headed toward the lab. She sensed danger in the air, like an ominous thickness hanging around every corner.
